Holy Thursday Pilgrimage

Knights Events Comments Off on Holy Thursday Pilgrimage

Brother Knights,

There is an old Catholic tradition of visiting churches on the night of Holy Thursday. The custom goes back centuries to the practice of people in Rome visiting on that night the seven major basilicas in the city. The intent was to engage in a sort of “vigil” of Good Friday, and to recall the vigil of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The journey was viewed as a “pilgrimage”, that is, the travel was a much a part of the prayer as was the actual destination.

We can recreate that custom in our own area. Seven churches has become something of a challenge because of distances in the suburbs, and since many now close early. But the circuit below is possible in our area if you leave right after the Holy Thursday service in our own church. (Of course, other churches could be substituted or added.) Spend about twelve minutes in prayer in each of the churches, and the total will be about an hour and a half before the Blessed Sacrament. Add in the reflective time spent in travel from church to church, and the evening becomes a very prayerful preparation for Good Friday. The pilgrimage might be undertaken alone, or perhaps in small groups.

How you spend those minutes in each church is entirely up to you. As I go from church to church, I usually take my bible with me and read the gospel of John, Chapters 14-17. This has come to be known as the Last Supper Discourse, and forms a bridge between Holy Thursday and Good Friday. It picks up where the Holy Thursday liturgy leaves off. The passion reading on Good Friday begins with John, Chapter 18. I generally like to end my journey back at my home parish of St. John’s.

Wednesday Mass, Blessing & Planning Meeting

Knights Events | Knights Newsletter Comments Off on Wednesday Mass, Blessing & Planning Meeting

KC_cornerstone_coverWelcome Back Fr. Bob

Father Bob Tonelli, past pastor of our parish, will be joining us this Wednesday to celebrate the 7:00 PM mass.  Following mass, we’ve asked him to lead us in a special dedication ceremony in our Memorial Garden, which he had helped us realize during his tenure.   Our own Brother Knight Wally Niemczyk has devoted many hours to our Memorial Garden project.

A cornerstone will be unveiled and blessed.  Through the generosity of Diamond Cut Granite in Streamwood, Wally obtained a granite block which will be the cornerstone of our Memorial Garden.   A1 Trophies & Awards in Streamwood did the engraving of this new stone.   We would like to thank both these companies for their generous gifts to the memories of our fellow Brother Knights.

Please join us for mass and stay for the blessing afterwards.  Thank you Fr. Bob for honoring us with your presence for this memorial service.

Planning MeetingPlanning Meeting Wed. July 1st

Following the memorial service, the officers, and any interested Knight, will then head to the parish office for our monthly planning meeting.   Due to summer hours, the planning meetings are held at 7:30 PM on the first Wednesday of the month (instead of the usual Monday night time).  There is plenty of activities in planning stages, so this will be an important meeting.  Please try to attend this meeting following mass.

MORETTIS_KC_071615

July is the start of our new fraternal year, which means we need to replenish our funds so that we can support the various charitable activities in the following months. We are seeking your support with two fundraising events being held this week.

Mary’s Millennium Council #12801 is having a Fundraiser on July 16th at MORETTI’S Ristorante & Pizzeria in Bartlett (www.morettischicago.com). 3 ways to order:   Dine-In, Delivery or Carry Out.

No flier is needed. You just need to mention: “Knights of Columbus Mary’s Millennium Council #12801 of Streamwood” when ordering, either on the phone or at the restaurant. All day Thursday, Moretti’s will donate 15% of your restaurant order to our council. This is an easy way to support us, while having some great Italian food. Now is the perfect opportunity to try their food, if you’ve not done so before.

The Streamwood Summer Celebration is the last weekend of the month, July 24-26. Once again, the Knights and Ladies are hosting the Bingo Tent.   We’ll also be marching in the parade on Saturday.   Stop by our booth at the fair to say hello, and try your luck at bingo.

We’d like to thank all our supporters who have helped us in the past, and ask that you continue to do so this month.   The Knights and Ladies express their appreciation to Moretti’s management and staff for hosting our fundraising event.

Immaculate Conception Relic

An Icon of the Immaculate Conception will be in the Day Chapel starting May 1, until the end of May.

Madonna and Child - St. Peter's Square, VaticanThe Immaculate Conception is a dogma of the Catholic Church maintaining that from the moment when she was conceived the Blessed Virgin Mary was kept free of original sin and was filled with the sanctifying grace normally conferred during baptism.

When the Knights of Columbus Council #12801 formed, we took Mary as our symbol to watch over and guide us in the works we perform in her name, in our parish and surrounding community.
