On October 2, 1881, a small group of men met in the basement of St. Mary’s Church on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut. Called together by their parish priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, these men formed a fraternal society that would one day become the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization.

On December 12, 2000, a small group of St. John the Evangelist Parish men were called together by their priests,   Rev. Robert F. Tonelli and Rev. Fred C. Pesek , to form Mary’s Millennium Council #12801. They were officially recognized by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus as evidenced in the attached certificate.

Both groups of men sought strength in solidarity, and security through unity of purpose and devotion to a holy cause: they vowed to be defenders of their country and their families and their Faith.   Today we honor those founding Brothers, many of whom remain active members, and all who have followed in their footsteps.   Together they have performed countless hours of service to God, the Church, and the community at large.   We call upon all the men of the parish, who aren’t currently members, to prayerfully consider following in their footsteps to keep this tradition alive in our parish.  This weekend Brother Knights of Mary’s Millennium Council will be in the narthax answering any questions you might have about our council and the order.

On April 6th, Hanover Township held the 2019 Supervisor’s Community Service Awards breakfast at the senior center.  Mary’s Millennium Council Knights of Columbus is proud to announce that we had two Knights nominated for Senior Volunteer, Bill Henderson and Gary Pappin.  Bill Henderson was awarded “Outstanding Senior Volunteer Supervisor’s Choice” for 2019.

Bill was nominated for the “countless hours volunteering in the community”.  Some of the highlights from the nomination included Bill’s work on the Committee on Youth for Hanover Township,  Race Director for our annual Knights Challenge 5k which benefits the food pantry, working in the food pantry distributing food, and helping residents facing hardships get assistance.  (click here to read nomination)

Bill was among good company from St. john’s receiving awards.   Our Village President, Billy Roth, who is a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, received the “Mel Runzel Volunteer Service Award”.  Mary Thon was another recipient receiving the Adult Volunteer award from Supervisor Brian P. McGuire.

Congratulations Bill and all the award nominees and recipients for recognition of the dedication you’ve demonstrated helping the people of Hanover Township.  The Lord said, “Whatever you do for the least of your brothers, that you do unto me”.

Happy Mothers Day

News | Uncategorized Comments Off on Happy Mothers Day

Today we honor Mary, our Blessed Mother and Mother of Jesus Christ, as well as all mothers – living and deceased. In churches across the world, there were May Crowning’s and special blessings for Mothers.

This day has become a commercialized holiday in many parts of the world, especially in the United States. Hopefully that doesn’t change the underlying reason for the special observance – honoring those loving women who have given the precious gift of life. It is fitting that they be the recipient of gifts and loving affection today.

Knight’s Prayer to Mary

Mary, Queen of the Knights, guide all the activities of our Order. Keep us true to our pledge to extend the kingship of your divine son on earth. Through your intercession, win for us the grace ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues which should characterize those especially dedicated to the service of God’s Kingdom. Make us always aware that as your Knights we are constantly observed, our faith judged, and our Order appreciated. Accept, O Mary, this renewed pledge of loyalty and devotion of your Sons, the Knights of Columbus. Amen.

In Prayerful Solidarity

Today the world was stunned by news that the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, was engulfed in flames. As the day unfolded, the world watched as the spire and roof collapsed. Fortunately, no one was killed during the blaze and priceless relics were saved from the flames.

Statement from Supreme Knight Carl Anderson:
“The Knights of Columbus express prayerful solidarity with their Brother Knights in France and all those who mourn the fire catastrophe at Notre-Dame Cathedral — one of the world’s greatest treasures of the human spirit.”

Many years ago, I had the good fortune of visiting the cathedral, and wanted to share some of those images here. The French minister vowed to rebuild the cathedral. Please keep our Brother Knights in France in your prayers along with those brave first responders who fought hard to save the structure.

This is one Holy Week that will be remembered for many years to come. Perhaps God is sending us a message. Watching the news this evening, the one thing that struck me, as they entered the cathedral after the fire was extinguished, was that the altar remained despite the damage elsewhere.
